The story of my life has had so many “coincidences” that it could probably make a good movie. Among these interesting coincidences, I can now include the life, contributions and departure of Steve Jobs, one of my sources of inspiration.

It all starts with three mysterious numbers that have been part of my life ever since I was born. I was born on Oct. the 5th. 19xx, so you can bet that my “three mysterious numbers” will have to do with some of the numbers in my birth date: 10/5/xx (the “xx” also count).

I was first aware of one of these “mysterious” numbers when I was in 5th. grade and my teacher asked us to choose and write down our favorite number. I chose the number 5 not on “coincidence” but because of the fact that I was born on Oct. the 5th. However, it is clear that I could have not influenced my 5th. grade teacher to ask me for a favorite number when I was 10 (5 plus 5) years old. So, I started to pay close attention to the number 5 since then.

Later on I became aware of the second mysterious number, the number 1, appearing constantly around me. Maybe one of the most repetitive situations with the number 1 involved is when I turn to watch the actual time on any clock and 11:11 is there. It could happen in the morning as well as at night, and it just happens so often that it could not pass by as a “simple coincidence” anymore when I related it to another of the numbers in my birth date.

From that moment on, I became more aware of how the number 1 and the number 5 have been present in many types of events in my life. Let me give you a few real and specific examples next:

Example (1): One time when my friends were talking about the best age for them to get married, I shared my own thoughts and said: “I think I will be getting married at around 25″. Well, guess what, it happened exactly like that. I got married exactly 25 (that’s 5 x 5) years after I was born. Yes, it just happened as a “coincidence” when me and my girl friend were planning the wedding. We both wanted to get married during the month of October because of the good weather we get during this month. We both wanted the date to be on one of the Saturdays of that month, and it just happened by “coincidence” that October the 5th. was the 1st. Saturday of that month. The ceremony was scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m., but the most eye-opening news came when my mom told me: “you chose to start a new life exactly at the same hour when you were born… you were born on Oct. the 5th. at 5:00 p.m.”… Wow! So many “coincidences” for the number 5, huh?

Example (2): One day I wanted to rent a P.O. Box where the UPS could send packages during working hours and have someone available to receive the package for me. The Postal Office does not receive UPS packages, so I went to one of those small stores that rent postal boxes and keep your larger boxes in a storage area until you come and pick them up. So, I had just rented my new P.O. Box but I did not know how to write my new postal address, so I asked the clerk for it and when she gave me the complete address the “coincidence” jumped right in front of my face: she gave me the Box number 15-515 and the street address just happened to be the 111 of the 1st. street… Wow! So many 1 and 5 combinations for a simple event as getting a new P.O. Box address.

Now, I don’t want to write a very long post here, probably I already did by now, so I’ll jump right into the moment when I became aware of the third mysterious number. It just happened 5 days ago when I heard the news about Steve Job’s departure. I was celebrating my “NN”th. birthday. Yes, he passed away on 10/5/11 when the 10th. month (October) has 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. Now the third “mysterious number” appeared when I noticed that Steve Jobs died at the age of 56 and the number 6 got my attention: I realized that if you add 1 plus 5 gives you a 6, and the number 6 also appears in the numbers of my birthday (will not reveal where, though). So, I’ll have to start concentrating on the number 6 appearing around me from now on.

Steve Jobs’s life has been an inspiration to my own life ever since I learned that made possible the 1st. Graphical Operating System in the history of computers. He built it 10 years before Bill Gates came out with his 1st. Windows version of his operating system. He bought Pixar (having a different name) right when the original company was planning on closing their 3D Animation projects. He also left us with so many interesting tech tools and gadgets that now form part of the daily lives of millions of people around the globe.

As a contribution to his memory to keep alive for the years to come, I want to close this post by leaving a video I found in YouTube about of one of his most inspirational speeches I’ve ever heard. This speech was recorded in 2005 (noticed the number 5 there?) during the graduation day for the Stanford University students. Oh and, by the way, I could noticed that the number 1 and 5 also appear in the length of this video. I did not record it, of course, but the numbers 1 and the 5 can be easily noticed on its 15:05 minutes in length. I must end here by saying that this time the coincidences are not as important as the message that you’ll find next. Enjoy:

Wow! That was a wonderful film on living sea giants I watched last night!

This is a film I watched on Animal Planet about Andrea Marshall’s under-water work and her great discovery in the Southern coast of South Africa. She is filmed doing her under-water research on manta rays living in this area of world, until the moment comes where she discovers that a second species of giant manta rays approaches the area. They look very similar, only a little darker than the common ones in the area, and another difference between both is that the giant mantas travel longer distances than the most common ones.

I’m including this great news here for a few good reasons:

1) I find it to be a great film, very professional and interesting.
2) I love sea life since I can remember, and I couldn’t miss this type of film once I found out about it.
3) I believe that the type of research Andrea Marshall is doing deserves a broader range of publicity.

Now, I know I’ve been talking and talking about this great film, and you might be wondering what it looks like, what is so interesting about it. So, I will leave you a little sample of this great film (sorry, only a few minutes here) next:

I know I have mentioned in other Posts that I am a tech guy, someone who tries to make good use of technology as best as I can, but, and I’m going to write it as a BIG BUT:

There is nothing like watching a good movie in a good cinema.

The first reason for my statement above is due to the fact that, no matter how large you can get a TV screen for your house’s living room, you will never get the spectacular majestic view that can only achieved with the cinema extra-large projection screens.

The second reason for the initial statement, maybe as important as the first one, is: sound quality. I know that there are some good home theaters available in stores now a days, but the extraordinary surround sound distribution, or the THX extraordinary sound quality in films can only be listened while sitting comfortably in a good cinema chair.

And maybe a good third reason would be for those who enjoy sharing a good movie with friends and loved ones and, for those who are tired of the same four walls all the time, have the opportunity to get out of the house just for fun.

Now, there are a couple of things I like doing after I’ve enjoyed a real nice movie on extra-large screen format, coupled with extraordinary sound quality, and accompanied with family members or good friends: (1) going back to the cinema to repeat the great experience at least once again, and (2) purchase the DVD version as soon as it gets down to a decent price. Both of these approaches gives us the opportunity to watch the movie from a different angle, not just for simple entertainment, but as an opportunity to check movie writer and movie maker techniques.

I am leaving a link to DVD discount offers for your convenience next:

Esperanto is an auxiliary language spoken in many countries worldwide, thus, an interesting option for International Films.

We have talked about this subject in a previous post here, but this time we want to include a list of Films where the story characters speak Esperanto or the film includes Esperanto subtitles.

Among professionally-produced Esperanto films, the list includes titles such as: Incubus (with William Shatner), La Patro, Angoroj, Gerda Malaperis, and Senmova. Of course, all film titles above were chosen using Esperanto Language, and these are only a few examples of a longer list of Esperanto Films available. For a more complete list, you can visit the following (Esperanto) website: More Esperanto Films.

In case you’re wondering what Esperanto sounds like, I’m including below the Incubus film trailer I found in Youtube:

What if Anyone in the World could understand International Films without Translation or Subtitles?

Wouldn’t that be great? That could be possible in the future, without watching the translated version of the film, and of course: without subtitles. How? Well we’ll talk about it later on in this same Post, but first let me explain why I get kind of excited about this possibility:

I have watched a few international films and, even though I liked the original story, sometimes the subtitles or the bad translations interfered with a good appreciation of details. So, on the one hand, I prefer watching them in their original version because they sound and look more “real” than the translated versions. But, on the other hand, I dislike having to focus on the lower edge of the screen just to understand what the characters are saying. I’m pretty sure that many details of the film get lost out of my sight that way, while I’m reading subtitles.

I’m sure there are many good International Films in the making out there, and a good solution to enjoy them without distracting subtitles or unnatural translations would be if they were filmed using an International Language. But, wait a minute: is there a International Language in the first place? And, if there is one, how hard would it be for most anyone in the world to learn it just to enjoy this type of film? We’ll find out in a few moments…

The answer to the first question above is: Yes, there is at least one… Esperanto.

Esperanto was developed by Dr. Ludwig Zamenhof more than a century ago, but it was accepted by UNESCO as an auxiliary Language until 1954. Later on, in 1985′s general conference, UNESCO recogniced the great potential of Esperanto for international understanding and communication among people of different nationalities.

Now regarding the second question above: how hard would it be for most people to learn Esperanto? You might get impressed by the answer… around 50 hours. Yes, it is possible to learn it that quickly because it was developed precisely for that purpose: an international auxiliary language that could be learned in the minimal time. The problem with English and almost any other evolved language is the long time required to learn it as well as native speakers do.

In short: let’s get rolling the good news about this International Language, and spend around 50 hours learning it. With such a resolution, hopefully in the near future, we could have film makers, actors and movie lovers enjoying a good movie anywhere in the world without obstructive subtitles and unnatural translations.

I am including below a Video which I found in Youtube. I like it for three reasons: (1) it brings a wonderful message to this world, (2) it is about another dreamer (John Lennon), and (3) his beautiful song includes Esperanto subtitles. So, “you might say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one”. Enjoy:

Have you watched 3D Animation Films lately? I have and, wow, they just keep getting better and so realistic.

I still remember my first impressions while watching 3D Animation Films. The stories were good, most of the time, but the characters’ looks where not as realistic as they are in more recent films. Basically, the characters’ hair did not look any real at all, maybe that was the reason why the first 3D Animation Films only included animals or toys as the main characters.

Let’s start with Toy Story as the first example: it was released on Nov. 1995 and it included a bunch of toys as the main characters, with a couple of human-looking characters appearing only in a few scenes. Three years later were released other 3D Animation Films: Ant’Z (Oct. 1998), and A Bug’s Life (Nov.1998). You might recall that all of the characters in both films were animals.

With Shrek and Monsters, Inc., released on Apr. and Nov. 2001, things started to change a little bit. Even though the film makers persisted on the same unbalanced combination between animal/toy and human characters, the little details on the characters’ hair made a notorious difference. You might recall in Shrek how Fiona and Lord Farquad were created with a more-realistic natural-looking hair, and what about the so-natural hair movements on Monsters’ main character: Sullivan… just a little detail on hair but a great step forward on 3D Animation characters.

From that year on, more natural-looking details and human-looking characters have been introduced to 3D Animation Films. You might remember Vanessa in Be Movie (Nov. 2007), Carl Fredricksen and Russell in Up (May. 2009), or almost all the main characters in Megamind (Nov. 2010).

All of these realistic human characters have contributed in such a way to the movie stories, that now is not uncommon for movie spectators to laugh and cry more often along with the characters in the films. Making the experience in the cinema a lot more enjoyable, even though the story was presented by virtual reality characters. Isn’t that interesting?

Oh yes I do. I love movie quotes because they bring back to memory the nice experience I had when I watched the film. Plus, some times I use movie quotes to answer a question that reminds me a related film scene dialogue. Let me give you a few movie quotes from some of my favorite films next:

1) Lovett: “Are you ready to go back to Titanic?”

Guess what film that movie quote is about? Me too, that is an easy one.

Here’s another one from the same film:

2) Rose: “Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams. And it was. It really was.”

Sometimes it’s easy to guess what film they were gotten from, but what about the next movie quote?:

3) “How do we keep our balance?… Tradition!”

I love that film so much that I had to purchase the DVD. Can you guess what movie the above quote is about? Think, think… guessed? Good! If not, here’s a hint: it has to do with a small village in Anatevka… got it? Good! If not, here’s another hint: the film title starts with “The Fiddler on…” – got it? Good!… The Fiddler on the Roof. Right.

Ways to make sure you will get a pleasant experience with the newest movies in town.

There are a few ways to find out if the recent movies in town are worth paying for them in the first place. Starting from the traditional method of waiting for others to watch them, and get references from them, to making good use of technology while doing your own movie reviews search.

Yes, technology makes life easier in many different situations, and movie reviews is one of the available options. So you might want to check latest reviews published on the internet before choosing the specific movie you want to watch. This is of course something relative to the watchers’ point of view, as most anything else, so you might want to take those comments as simple referrals. Albert Einstein had said it long time ago: everything is relative subject’s point of view. So, it might be wise to keep searching around if you have access to other referral sources.

What other sources do I usually pay attention to, before paying for a cinema ticket?

Well, there are movie trailers, off course, but I have watched a few excellent movie trailers that turned out to be just that: excellent movie trailers about a poor film. But, I have been confronted to the opposite too, let me explain it with the best example I’ve actually experienced while watching movie trailers: Titanic. Here’s my first impression when I watched James Cameron’s Titanic movie trailer:

Wow! Extraordinary special effects, but, who will want to pay a cinema ticket to watch a story we already know?

Yeap! That was my very first impression. Nevertheless, I did pay a cinema ticket to watch it, mainly because my little girl wanted to watch it. So, I went to the movies with her and…

Wow! Extraordinary special effects for well known history facts coupled with a extraordinary way of story telling.

From that moment on I came out with this conclusion: good story tellers write good movie scripts and make good movies. So, if you want to make sure that a new movie release is worth paying a cinema ticket, one of the things you might want to check (besides other watcher’s referrals: ’cause they are relative to the viewer’s opinion) is: find out who wrote the script and who made the film.

My particular list of good script writers and movie tellers is:

James Cameron: The Terminator, Titanic, Avatar.
George Lucas: Star Wars
Steven Spielberg: Indiana Jones, Schindlers’s List, Jurassic Parl

If you want to search for your own favorite movies, you may do so by entering the movie title in the Amazon Search Box located on the right side of this page.

What can the amateur movie writer do once the screenplay is finally written?

Well, the first answer might be: go back to your movie script and make sure that it complies with the standards found in the best screenplays ever written. We’ve already written about them in previous Posts throughout this website. In case you want to go back to them, or go check them for the first time, you can access the previous related Post by clicking here:
Screenwriting Tips

Now, once your movie script complies with the recognizable characteristics found in a good screenplay, you need to find ways to promote your finished script. One way to do this is by script submissions to screenwriting contests. There are many types of competitions: some of them are free to enter, some others charge less than $20 dollars, but you will find others that are more expensive to enter. The type of prize for 1st place winner is usually what will turn a screenwriting contest into an expensive or a less expensive one.

The second thing that the amateur move writer might want to look in a screenplay competition, besides monetary prizes, is Exposition. Sometimes you will find out that the monetary prize is close to nothing, if this is the case, you might want to check if they also offer Exposition as part of their prize for 1st place winner to recognized movie makers. This type of competition might turn a better option than just a monetary compensation for the amateur movie writer.

You can search for available screenplay competitions without leaving this website, all you have to do is type those two keywords here: WebSearch TAB
